Hi!
I am arriving from Australia in Montreal on the 8th. I have booked the Fairmont in Tremblant (one time fancy thing to celebrate moving to Canada)
So with that comes the questions about where to ride? I would considering myself upper intermediate I can ride anything Australia has to throw at us but places like Whistler gave me pause last year for crazy huge drops! How much of the mountain would you expect open for January?
Also if the weather is hectic where would you recommend riding to avoid it? I guess that question I will re ask around Jan 9, as its wind dependent.

The whole mountain should be open by then. They are currently blowing snow on the Versant Soliel. Now Thursday though, part of the mountain may not be open as the numbers of people may not warrant it.
There are tours arranged 2X daily from the top of the gondola. You might want to take one of those. We do not have near the terrain that WB has. You should have no problem skiing/riding all but 1 or 2 runs. Dynamite might throw you off for instance.
Be prepared for VERY COLD like -20C in January!! Facemasks are a must. I'll should be up for the weekend, but don't know about Thursday. That's too far in the future right now.

Probably better - Magasin de Place would have them or any other shop in the village. Salomon shop, Atomic shop, Adrenalin or Explore.

Terrain in eastern North America would be similar to Australia - all the skiing is below treeline at lower elevations (base around 1000 ft. above sea level and summit around 3200'). Mid january is the coldest time of year, made even more so due to the windchill.

Thanks 613, I suspect the snow quality will blow me away somewhat vs what I am used to which is snot at best... maybe 1-2 pow days a year vs pretty much super cold/soft stuff till march

Tremblant has the advantage of being close and able to do a day trip from Montreal but you will probably want to eventually try something else. IMO, these places (in no particular order) are my favourites for skiing in eastern North America and are better than Tremblant (if your criteria is just based on skiing alone) www.lemassif.com/en/accueilwww.sugarloaf.com/www.whiteface.com/Btw, there is lots of non-extreme terrain @ Whistler - always a good place to go in spring when the season is winding down in the east and conditions are deteriorating and to slushy due to the lower elevation
